such service in excess of ten years, and with a further

addition of one-fiftieth in respect of each complete

year of service beyond twenty years until the maximum

pension of two thirds of his salary is reached.

VIII. Should an officer be compelled to retire through

ill-health before ten years, a gratuity of one month's

pay for each year's service may be granted.

IX. On joining the service an officer is required to

provide himself with a uniform box, the cost of which

is $8.

X. The hours of duty are such as the Inspector General

of Police may direct. They vary, but in the majority

of cases they do not exceed 8 hours in the 24 for

Bater Police, and 6 hours in the 24 for Land Police.

XI. An officer joins the Force with rank of Constable,

and is attached to the Police Training School. The

course of instruction lasts from four to six months.

After being passed out of the Folice "raining School,

he is promoted to the rank of lance Sergeant on

completion of six month's service from the date of

arrival in the Colony, subject to the approval of the

Inspector General of Police.

XII. An officer is required to become efficient in

drill.

After passing out of the Police Training School,

he will attend such routine parades as may be directed.

The study of Chinese is compulsory for all European

Officers and no officer will be promoted to the rank of

Sergeant who has not passed the qualifying examination

(First Certificate). An officer selected for promotion

to the rank of Jub-Inspector who has not obtained a

Second Certificate in Chinese will be required to take

Chinese to the standard of the Second Certificate 28

compulsory
